The 4th July may have been American independence day, but much more significantly it was the date for the annual Gooseberry Pie competition at the club. The competition was organised for this year to tie in with a visit from Wivenhoe SC who came bearing gifts in the form of gooseberry pies. Under the auspices of the Sailing Club the ancient ceremony of “Gooseberry Pie” festivities on St. Peter’s Day, linked with the annual fair, and visits by Brightlingsea and West Mersea sailing club members were revived in the late 1940s. The pictures below show the 1950 Gooseberry Pie Competition.
For this year, the competition was accompanied by an excellent BBQ – courtesy of Adie with thanks to Hazel, Chris and everyone else who helped. Adie also judged the winning pies and the winning Tollesbury pie was made by John Carter – congratulations. Thanks to everyone for an excellent evening.
